Ep.4 : How do psychologists decide who is safe and who is dangerous?
There’s often no doubt when a suspect is arrested that they have committed the crime – especially if they don’t deny it. But were they responsible for the crime? If they had a psychiatric illness when they committed the crime then they are found to be not responsible for their actions and are sent to a secure hospital. If they are just evil they are sent to prison.
So who can say whether they are mad or bad? Psychologists assess them and with the evidence the jury can decide.
We look at cases including Eden Strang the Naked Samurai Swordsman who slashed his way through a church congregation. David Copeland the London Nailbomber who’s actions resulted in the death of 3 people and horrific injuries to several others. The Yorkshire Ripper, the serial killer of 13 women who brought terror to the north of England over a number of years. Were these men mad or bad?
